Lord help us – I was an early adopter of the use of AI – Artificial Intelligence as part of my ‘other’ journalistic work in the media – tracking new technology and the signs of the times – HOWEVER – I have just watched educated adults who want to “connect with nature”, talking to a tree and of course as this is LaLa Land, the tree is ‘talking’ back as the bio-electric signals + the uploaded local data (connected to a voice processor) responds.
In other words, it feeds out what was fed in.
That’s how it works at its basest level and we’ve been using it for many years via Mr Google etc but we called it the ‘search function’ or browser or whatever.
But AI is different in that they are making it a ‘thing’… something else to buy into – and sign up to – because once it has YOUR data, they have it forever.
Okay I get it – if you can ask a tree how old it is (50 years old in this case) and it was ACTUALLY talking back – that’s errr, rather freaky I’m sure you’ll agree – HOWEVER if it was a 1,000 year old Oak tree in one of our ancient forests where early Christians gathered in secret to avoid persecution from the RC church, I might find that rather interesting as I LOVE history for example.
BUT we know we are NOT talking to a tree – we are talking to a machine which can change our speech to text and with a fast processor, it searches the data which has already been input and comes back with the answer which is then output as speech.
Simple.
In THIS case however, they are promoting it as “the 2 species … connecting with each other”…
One person asked this ‘tree’ what’s the silliest thing you have ever seen a human do… (I thought that answer was obvious!!) but it ‘replied’ that it was “young visitors weaving garlands from fallen leaves… it was playful, like a gentle breeze tickling my branches.”
This is no longer factual ie ’50 years old’ – this is attributing a thought process and emotion to a plant.
{sigh} It was ever thus – worshipping the created rather than The Creator.
